MURIEL (MIMI) DUSSOM SOMERS passed to eternal life March 16, 2012. Born in New Orleans, La., Mimi met Charles Elton Somers at a Carnival Ball; they were married 50 years before he died in 1999.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Lynne Somers (Doug) Butterworth and Shelly Somers Kennedy (John Cummins); grandchildren Lili Butterworth, Christi Kennedy and Connary Kennedy, and niece Anne Lacourrege.

Mimi graduated from Tulane University, translated documents during World War II, and was a Social Security field agent in 3 states for 40 years. She had a lifelong love of teaching, learning, language and music. She taught school in New Orleans and Tulsa, earning MAs at the University of Tulsa and University of Oklahoma, where she also completed PhD coursework and taught modern languages. Mimi sang in 52 operas in New Orleans, Houston and Tulsa, and in the Holy Family Cathedral choir.

Visitation from Noon until 5 p.m. and a 6 p.m. rosary will be held at Fitzgerald’s Ivy Chapel in Tulsa Friday, March 23. A Celebration of Life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24 at Holy Family Cathedral, with interment at 11:30 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery.
